River House
Water Street
One of Chestertown's 18th century architectural treasures on a grand scale, River House was built between 1784-1787 by Thomas Smythe, owner of Widehall, nearby at the foot of High Street.
River House was the last great private dwelling to be erected prior to Chestertown's decline as a port. Five stories in height, it represents the transition from late Georgian to the Federal style of American architecture.
Flemish bond brick is used on the street facade, American bond on the sides. The carved wooden cornice, brick belt course and water table give the house an impressive facade.
The entire back of the house is covered by two large piazzas that overlook the beautiful garden which ends at the Chester River. The interior is embellished by the hand-applied stenciling with center motifs reflecting the natural environment of the Chesapeake Bay region. |
